FYSICA

Friday 11 April

Organized by the Netherlands' Physical Society (NNV) and Leiden University

Fysica 2025

The Gorlaeus building of Leiden University, venue of the congress

Fysica 2025

Marjolein Dijkstra (UU), winner of the Physica Prize 2025 will hold the traditional Physica Prize lecture. She has made significant contributions to advancing physics in the Netherlands, not only through her mentorship of dozens of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers but also through her active involvement in shaping physics policy. Dijkstra was among the first physicists in the Netherlands to explore the field of active (self-propelled) particles, which has since become an active field in soft matter physics.

FYSICA 2025

In de avond is er de mogelijkheid om Rijksmuseum Boerhaave te verkennen tijdens een speciale avondopenstelling voor FYSICA-bezoekers

19.30 Join and run the Singelloop

Join us for Leiden’s most popular sports event of the year, the famous Singelloop Leiden! Thousands of people, young and old, take to the streets to run the 6,5 kilometers around the city. The Singelloop starts at 19.30 hours, time and point of gathering to be announced.

19.30 Visit Rijksmuseum Boerhaave

Especially for FYSICA visitors, Rijksmuseum Boerhaave opens its doors in the evening! From 19.30 to 21.30 hours, it is possible to wander through the Netherlands’ treasure house of science and medicine and winner of the European Museum of the Year Award 2019.

19.30 Excursion to the Old Observatory (Oude Sterrewacht)

In collaboration with L.A.D. ‘F. Kaiser’, the astronomy sub-group of the the Leidse study association De Leidsche Flesch, an excursion will be organized to the Oude Sterrewacht, the oldest universitary observatory in the world. Be quick, only 30 people can attend this event!

CHANGE OF TIME: 19.15 Walk and explore the Leiden wall formulas

Leiden has a particularly grand history in physical discoveries. That is what inspired physicists Sense Jan van der Molen and Ivo van Vulpen to set up a project together with Stichting Tegenbeeld to paint formulas originating in Leiden on walls in its historic centre. On the evening of FYSICA, you have the chance to stroll with Van der Molen and Van Vulpen along  groundbreaking formulas, all with a Leiden connection, such as the Einstein field equation, and hear what they can tell about them. The walk will finish at Rijksmuseum Boerhaave.  Starting point is 'Het Gerecht', close to Parking Leiden Haagweg.
